The latest study by IEEE reveals the most important tech areas in 2023

Curious to know how technology will shape our lives and the world around us in 2023? Every day, executives are looking for new ways to leverage technology to stay ahead of the competition. But what will be different in the coming years? What trends should you be aware of? Here’s a look at some of the top tech predictions for 2023.

According to a survey by IEEE, the five most important technologies in 2023 are cloud computing (40%), 5G (38%), metaverse (37%), electric vehicles (EVs) (35%), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) (33%).

The top five industry sectors that will see the most impact of technology in 2023 are telecommunications (40%), automotive and transportation (39%), energy (33%), and banking and financial services (33%).

Tech predictions for 2023

Connectivity, 5G, 6G

“Fully electric, shared on-demand driverless vehicles will have a positive impact on society in 2023 because they will give underserved and diverse communities access to fast and reliable mobility.” – Bilin Aksun-Guvenc, IEEE Member.

97% of survey respondents agree that 5G will have a big impact on vehicle connectivity and automation in 2023.

Areas that 5G will benefit the most in the next year are remote learning and education (56%), telemedicine, including remote surgery, health record transmissions (54%), entertainment, sports, and live event streaming (51%), personal and professional day-to-day communications (49%), transportation and traffic control (29%), manufacturing/assembly (25%), carbon footprint reduction and energy efficiency (23%).

“Space satellites as a way to bring mobile connectivity to remote areas will be a game-changer because they enable leapfrogging off the need to build very expensive terrestrial infrastructure. They’re also the ultimate virtual private network – ‘VPN’ – for extra-jurisdictional content access.” – Eleanor Watson, IEEE Senior Member.

95% of global technologists say that space satellites for remote mobile connectivity will be a game-changer in 2023 enabling 5G device connections anywhere, 24/7, leapfrogging terrestrial infrastructure.

“6G will primarily be the subject of research and experimentation in 2023 but look for mainstream adoption in the next five years.” – Bala Prasad Peddigari, IEEE Senior Member, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. 88% of surveyed technologists agreed to this.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity will be a top concern for technology leaders in 2023. Cloud vulnerability concerns will increase to 51% in 2023, followed by the mobile and hybrid workforce (46%) and data center vulnerability (43%).

Metaverse for sustainability

“Metaverse-related technology will be a major contributor to reducing carbon emissions because it allows technologists and engineers to perform simulations in cyberspace, rather than relying on real-world demonstrations that run on traditional energy.” – Daozhuang Lin, IEEE Senior Member, IEEE Consumer Technology Society.

According to the global technologists surveyed by IEEE, 71% say that 5G and ubiquitous connectivity will be very important for advancing the development of the metaverse in 2023. 58% say that innovation around virtual reality (VR) headsets and augmented reality (AR) glasses will favor the growth of the metaverse.

94% of technologists have prioritized sustainability goals for 2023 and beyond. They believe that technologies implemented must be energy-efficient and help shrink carbon footprint.

Metaverse-related technologies will be put to use in different ways. 91% of respondents say that their companies are adopting the metaverse to bring employees together for corporate training across offices, conferences, and hybrid meetings. 76% expect that 26% to 75% of interactions with colleagues, customers, and management at their company will happen virtually in 2023.

AI and automation

“Tiny machine learning and 5G technologies will have the greatest positive impact on society in 2023 because they will allow the automatization of many activities in the industry.” – Carmelo José Albanez Bastos Filho, IEEE Senior Member.

98% of technologists believe that in the future, AI-powered software and mobile robots will automate processes and tasks. This will include data analysis, which will allow humans to be more efficient and effective.

24% of technologists say that 1–25% of jobs across the entire global economy will be augmented by AI-driven software in 2023.  40% say 26–50% of jobs will be AI-driven and 27% expect 51–75% of work to be based on AI.

98% of respondents say that using digital twin technology and virtual simulations in 2023 to design, develop, and safely test product prototypes will be important. 68% of them say it will be very important.

As you can see, there are many exciting technological advances to look forward to in 2023. Some of these tech predictions may seem far-fetched, but with the rapid pace of change in the technology sector, they may become reality. What trends are you most interested in?
