What it is
E-Day stands for Emergence Day — the moment the Locust Horde erupted from beneath the surface of Sera and overwhelmed the planet's population. The original saga began fourteen years after that day. This game is that day.
The campaign follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, two soldiers of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, as an origin story. John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro return in their roles. It is set in Kalona, a location new to the franchise.
The Coalition and People Can Fly are developing it, Xbox Game Studios is publishing, and it is rebuilt on Unreal Engine 5 targeting 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second in campaign and multiplayer.

The part that confuses everyone: Game Pass
Game Pass does not include October 1 early access. Subscribers play October 6, the same as a standard purchase. Playing five days early requires separately buying the Premium or Collector's Edition.
That matters more than it sounds if you play in a squad. Co-op supports up to four players online, so if three friends buy Premium and one is on Game Pass alone, that fourth player cannot join the October 1 sessions.
What's different from previous Gears games
Cover-based combat returns, but with modernized movement and traversal that add freedom and verticality. Fan-favorite weapons come back reimagined — yes, the Lancer chainsaw — alongside entirely new weapons built for brutal close-quarters fighting.
The tone is darker. The Coalition has said it wanted to restore fear to the series: familiar enemies are more threatening, joined by new creatures and villains. The campaign can be played solo, in split-screen co-op, or online with up to four players.
